Conditioning, stretching and strengthening exercises can help prevent neck sprains and strains. For sports that increase risk of neck injury, wear protective equipment.

Immediately upon injury, use rest, ice and compression. Apply ice for at least the first 24 hours. After 72 hours, use heat. Ointments can be applied to soothe muscle pain. Your doctor may prescribe a neck brace (cervical collar) to help immobilize your neck. Limit activity to your neck until healing is well under way. Massage is an effective treatment for pain relief.

For any serious injury, consult your doctor.
