Groin Strain:

The groin is that depression that lies between the thigh and the abdominal region. Muscles can be torn in this area during activity and elicit what is commonly called a groin strain. Any overextension of the groin musculature may result in a strain. Running, jumping or twisting with external rotation can produce such injuries. The groin strain presents one of the most difficult injuries to care for. The strain can be felt as a sudden twinge or feeling of tearing during an active movement.

Sports that require quick stops and starts or blows from contact can injure the muscles or tendons in the groin. A mild strain means a slight muscle pull. Moderate strains tear a muscle or tendon. Severe strains rupture the attachment of muscle, tendon and bone.

Symptoms of groin strain include:

  • moving or stretching your leg at the hip causes groin pain
  • tenderness and swelling
  • weakness
  • spasms in the thigh or abdomen
