Many ankle conditions, especially sprains, can be reduced by stretching the Achilles tendon, strengthening the muscles, ligaments and tendons around your ankle, calf and front of the leg, wearing proper footwear and in some cases, proper taping.

Immediately upon injury, use RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation). Apply ice for at least the first 24 hours, preferably wrapping the whole joint. Elevate your foot. If you can, keep it higher than your hip to decrease swelling. A lace-up boot with straps or an ankle support is good for compression and will restrict movement to help immobilize your ankle.

Restrict bearing weight on the ankle. For more severe injuries, your doctor may recommend crutches or a walking cast. Stretching and strengthening exercises can help the recovery process. Ankle supports can give added compression and help stabilize your ankle during sports and exercise.

For any serious injury, consult your doctor.
